ASA Philippines Foundation Partners with UA&P to Support Scholars

On August 15, 2025, the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) and the ASA Philippines Foundation came together in a meaningful ceremony at ASA’s new head office in Bonifacio Global City. The occasion marked the ceremonial turnover of a grant to the Dr. Placido L. Mapa, Jr. Scholarship Endowment, a fund that continues the legacy of one of UA&P’s most respected leaders.
The event brought together leaders from both institutions who share a common vision: to use education as a powerful tool in alleviating poverty and shaping future leaders.
A Shared Vision for Education
In his welcome remarks, Mr. Richard Dee, Trustee of the ASA Philippines Foundation, thanked UA&P for its partnership and expressed hope for more future collaborations between the two institutions.
Ms. Esther Santos, who serves as trustee of both ASA Philippines Foundation and UA&P, built on this message by recalling the words of the late philanthropist and ASA Philippines founder, Howard Dee. His call to strengthen poverty alleviation efforts remains at the heart of ASA’s mission. “Leadership means lifting the country,” she reminded the audience. “We hope that the future business leaders of UA&P will always have a heart for the poor.”
Honoring Dr. Placido L. Mapa, Jr.
After the symbolic turnover of the grant to Dr. Winston Padojinog, UA&P President, incoming President Atty. Philip Yeung spoke on behalf of the University. He expressed deep gratitude to ASA Philippines Foundation and reflected on the values embodied by Dr. Placido L. Mapa, Jr., after whom the scholarship endowment is named. “Dr. Placido L. Mapa, Jr. represents the ideal UA&P student — a family-oriented individual, a high-level professional, and a man deeply rooted in faith. Atty. Yeung added, “With the help of ASA Philippines, we will remain true to our mission of forming the next generation.”
Continuing a Legacy of Service
Closing the ceremony, Ambassador Jose Cuisia, Jr., Chairman of both ASA Philippines Foundation and the UA&P Board of Trustees, reminded everyone of the urgency of strengthening education in the country. “We are in an education crisis,” he said. “Amb. Howard Dee strongly believed that education is the best way to fight poverty. Through this grant, we continue his legacy and help more young Filipinos gain access to quality higher education.”
Moving Forward Together
With this new partnership, ASA Philippines Foundation and UA&P reaffirm their shared commitment to building a brighter future for the youth. Already, the Dr. Placido L. Mapa, Jr. Scholarship Endowment supports 11 scholars, and through it, many more promising students will have the chance to pursue their dreams at UA&P.
